Enhancing Patient Access into General Practice – The NWL Model

Across North West London, General Practices & Primary Care Networks were asked to develop an access model that enhances patients’ access to GP surgeries. The aims of the specification that North West London developed are to make effective use of resources, increase use of digital tools & increase proactive care for those that need it.
As part of the 2026/2027 specification, we submitted a delivery plan, which includes:

Telephone Access

Support the admin team by hiring and training more staff
Promote the NHS App, AccuRx triage submissions and pharmacy first service to reduce call waiting time
Improve the admin rota system to enhance patient experience

Triage

Requests are properly channelled and clinicians time effectively utilized
Ensure continuity of care is delivered accordingly
Improve the use of clinician’s time across the PCN

NHS App Uptake

Encourage nominated practice NHS App ambassadors to provide support for patients
Explore multilingual interpretation services to aid patient education
Creating a PCN wide patient participation group
Improving practice websites to promote useful information to aid patience access”
